Cape Railways

This map shows the distribution of railway lines in 1901. This is the Western system and the Midlands system, so dates back to the Cape Government Railways, which predated the Union of South Africa in 1910. Where the railway lines were laid down would all have been strongly affected by the discovery of diamonds. Notice the names that were current at the time: Orange River Colony, Bechuanaland, German Protectorate, Swaziland, Zululand, Lesotholand, Kaffraria, Pondoland…
