For the first time in Angola's history, a multi-party election was held in September, 1992 in an attempt to bring the 17 year Civil War to an end. The results of this election were published in the Journal de Angola, dated 2 October 1992. The ruling Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola (MPLA) won, leading União Nacional para a Independência Total de Angola (UNITA) to reject the election and resume the civil war.
