Description
Hornbostel-Sachs number: 321.321 Necked bowl lutes, It has a virginal or lute rose of Hans Rückers [you can see the initials HR clearly]. In a follow up investigation, Jeremy Montagu found a photograph of the identical rose from a virginal by Rückers. The lute has a most peculiar construction, especially for the 17th century, and the painting on the lid is also odd for that period. It is undoubtedly a counterfeit.
