Miners meet at the start of a national strike called by the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM). Although the mining companies and the government tried to prevent miners from organising unions, and miners were the last to unionize in the 1970s, NUM became the largest union in the COSATU (Congress of South African Trade Unions) federation, and a powerful force in the democratic political movement against oppression.
