For the first time in Angola's history, a multi-party election was held in September, 1992 in an attempt to bring the 17 year Civil War to an end. The results of this election were published in the Journal de Angola, dated 2 October 1992. The ruling Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola (MPLA) won, leading União Nacional para a Independência Total de Angola (UNITA) to reject the election and resume the civil war.

Willie Amutenya leading children in a dance. Willie Amutenya was captured at the Vietnam Camp, 50 km from the Namibian border, on the same day as the Cassinga attack in 1978 and held for years at Keikanachab prison, Mariental. The Battle of Cassinga, Cassinga Raid or Kassinga Massacre was a controversial South African airborne attack on a SWAPO refugee camp and military base at the former town of Cassinga, Angola on 4 May 1978.
