In time for festival: Mr Alexander Sinnet of Swift Street, Salt River, puts the finishing touches to a scale model of the Royal Sovereign, which was built in 1637. All parts of the model are hand-made and Mr Sinnet has tried to make everything as authentic as possible. It took him almost three-and-a-half years to complete the model and it will be ready just in time for a boat show during the Cape Town Festival.

Belching clouds of smoke and steam, this old locomotive looks almost defiant as it leaves Johannesburg and breaks free of the web-like system of power lines necessary for the running of less elegant electricity-driven trains. Named Millie, the loco was hauling a trainload of steam enthusiatics on 8 1/2 hour trip to Boons, near Magaliesburg, and back. The "day in the country by Steam" was arranged by the Historic Transport Association.

Mardi Gras - Members of the Fish Hoek Cricket Club and their girlfriends took time off from building their float for the Fish Hoek Mardi Gras this afternoon to pose as dancers from Ipi Tombi. Their float's name? Ipi Zombi. They were smeared with grease paint, full of the festive spirit and clad in the briefest of garments. Their float was one of many which paraded through Fish Hoek's main road this afternoon. Proceeds from the Mardi Gras will go to autistic children and the aged.
