Description

His name was Sydney and he lived in Langa. Sydney told me he earned all the money which kept his paralysed grandmother, his sister and his brother going. He did not know where his parents were. This photograph was taken on a Saturday evening on Main Road, Rosebank, 1981. On the following Monday morning I read a filler in 'The Cape Times' which told of a black boy named Sydney who was selling newspapers in Rosebank and was run over by a car on Saturday evening. He died instantly, the report said. The next day I started searching for his grandmother's house in Langa. She cried when I gave her the photograph of her smiling grandson

She testified to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) that her son Simon and his friend had been kidnapped and taken to the Sappi Gum Tree forest where they were killed. She said the boys had been abducted by members of the stability unit and the KwaZulu police. She wanted the perpetrators to come forward so that she could establish why they did what they did and so that she could give them a piece of her mind before she would forgive them.
