-
Description
-
The Observatory Congregational Church building cost R2,000 when it was up in 1894 in one of the green fields near the Royal Observatory. Today it is completely surrounded by houses and shops. Recently the old church hall, built in 1911, was replaced and the stage was transformed into a children's chapel, [part of which is seen above right. The oak pulpit on the immediate right was installed in 1944 and matches the pews, which come from the Caledon Square Church.]

Where people pray - Congregational Church (Claremont) - The 'Arderne Church', as the Claremont Congregational Church is known to its members, is one with a proud record of fine work among its own people and among those of neighbouring non-European churches. Its architecture is a mixture of Elizabethan and Gothic styles combined with Greek and a Swiss steeple. Its pleasing lines are floodlit every night of the year.

Subject

-
Description
-
Holy Trinity (Kalk Bay) - Framed against the Kalk Bay mountains in a terraced garden dotted with pine and cypress trees stands a pretty stone and thatch church. It was built by two Englishwomen as a replica of the church they attended in England before coming to South Africa in the middle of the nineteenth century. Perched on the mountainside at Kalk Bay and looking down to the sea is Holy Trinity Church. The terraced garden in front of the church, and the Garden of Remembrance it includes, are kept in order by two of the women parishioners. Below the garden is an old graveyard which has not been used since the turn of the century. A new hall is being built at the back of the church to take place of the old one that has been demolished.

Description
-
Christ Church (Constantia) - When church bells ring out over the vineyards of Constantia there need be little doubt that the sound comes from Christ Church, the picturesque place of worship which has served the surrounding community for nearly 90 years, for it is the only church in the valley. Built in a corner of the Silverhurst estate in 1895, Christ Church, Constantia, has the picturesque qualities of an old church in the English countryside. Its walls are of rough stone and it stands in the shelter of a grove of pine trees.

Description

I had the pleasure of seeing an interesting film at the BP Cinema on the restoration of ancient castles, abbeys and palatial homes in Britain. Restoration is not the correct description of what is being done, for the workmanship being carried out in some cases is a matter of survival of historic ruins. The complete restoration is beyond the realms of possibility in the present depressed economic situation. There came to mind a beautiful little stone church in Lower Main Road, Woodstock, which is in need of tender loving care. The dressed stone of the outside walls is black with the accumulated grime of car exhaust fumes and the smoke of many steam trains over the years. As a Christmas gesture, could not the citizens of Cape Town contribute towards the cleaning of these walls and thus earn the gratitude of the rector and his parish? I , for one, would be happy to make a donation.

Where people pray - Methodist Church (Pinelands) - The modern-styled Methodist Church at Pinelands is guarded by two pine trees and fronted by a garden and a crazy-paved path. Wide teak doors, surmounted by high wooden caves, lead from Union Avenue into the porch of the church, which superseded the old church next door in 1952. The church buildings include a hall, opened in 1940, and a manse.

Description

Architectural heritage: wooden casement windows in the historic St. Stephen's Church on Riebeeck Square are being replaced as part of a restoration project sponsored by the Vernacular Architecture Society. The church was built in 1800 as the first theatre in South Africa and helped relieve the garrison's boredom during the first British occupation. It became part of the Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk in 1857. Restoration workers, from left, Mr Kennet Plaatjies, Mr Sedick Slemming and Mr Shaheed Hendricks help conservation architect Mrs Pat Riley of the National Monuments Council size up a replacement window.

Parow East Dutch Reformed Church, Cape Town, 1962

Subject
-

-
Description
-
Almost futuristic in design, the Parow East Dutch Reformed Church in Tygerberg Road was built three years ago. The unusual tower rests on a triangular base and dwindles to a pinpoint at the top. The front wall is symbolically curved to welcome the congregation on Sundays. Steel, stone and metal have been combined into a harmonious, spacious place of worship.
