Description
-
Cape Town's changing skyline: the changing sky-line of the centre of Cape Town is emphasised in this picture, taken yesterday from the top of the Colosseum building. The massive new business block on the old G.P.O. site in Adderley Street (seen on right) has already reached its designed height of eight stories, rising 120 feet from street level. Before final completion next year, however, this imposing city block will have two 40-feet corner towers on the roof fronting Adderley Street, making an [WORD CUT OFF] height of 160 feet from [WORD CUT OFF] to pavement. Although this building will still be dwarfed by the S. A. Mutual, whose pinnacle (seen in background) is 276 feet above the street level, and by the new Post Office (to the left), the trio of buildings already obliterate many familiar vistas when viewed from the angle of street pedestrians. The City Hall (on extreme left) appears very small by comparison. The railway station building (in foreground) will eventually disappear to provide for the Strand-street extension under the new Foreshore scheme.
