Mozambican President, Samora Machel, and his wife, Graca, are welcomed to the Non-Aligned Summit in Harare by President Canaan Banana and Prime Minister Robert Mugabe (left). Two months later, on October 19 1986, President Machel, along with many of his cabinet, were killed when their plane crashed over South Africa's eastern border, Harare, Zimbabwe, 1986.

First-time voter takes directions at the first general elections held on 29 and 30 September 1992, to elect a President and National Assembly. This was the first attempt at holding multi-party elections ending 17 years of civil war. The ruling Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola (MPLA) won, leading União Nacional para a Independência Total de Angola (UNITA) to reject the election and resume the civil war.
