Barbed-wire in the beer hall to prevent meetings, Cape Town
-
Subject
-
Recreation areas, Communities, Restaurants, Politics, ,
-
Description
-
Barbed-wire coils a metre high have been placed inside Jubulala Hall, a disused beerhall in Nyanga East, preventing residents from holding meetings to protest against orders to demolish backyard shacks. Residents committee meetings planned for Saturday and last night had to be cancelled because the wire filled the hall and blocked its entrances. Mr G.N. Lawrence, the Western Cape Development Board's director of labour and housing, today confirmed that the board had put the wire in the Jubulala Hall to prevent "illegal use" of the building.

Description

Today (Tues) when the MCC [Marylebone Cricket Club] meet, it is expected that the South African tour will be formally cancelled. Yesterday (Monday) two of the principal characters who still hope that all is not lost, met to talk things over. Basil D'Oliveira and Colin Cowdrey met for the first time since the crisis of the past week, at Cowdrey's home at Limpsfield, Kent. Said Colin: "It was the first opportunity I had to talk with Basil since his selection for the tour." D'Oliveira, in London after a cricket holiday in the West Country, said: "When the skipper telephoned to congratulate me on my selection he invited me to drop in for a meal when I was next in London to talk over the tour. We both still very much hope that a way may be found for the tour to continue." Said Colin: "I live in hope."
