- The old Opera House: many of Cape Town's senior citizens will remember the old Opera House which was opened in 1893 and demolished in 1937. It stood at the corner of Darling and Parliament Streets on the site presently occupied by the General Post Office and was built before the present Standard Bank Building was extended from Adderley Street through to Parliament Street (or Grave Street as it was then known). The Opera House Restaurant on the first floor was for many years one of the most popular eating-out establishments in Cape Town.
