Description
-
Christ Church (Constantia) - When church bells ring out over the vineyards of Constantia there need be little doubt that the sound comes from Christ Church, the picturesque place of worship which has served the surrounding community for nearly 90 years, for it is the only church in the valley. Built in a corner of the Silverhurst estate in 1895, Christ Church, Constantia, has the picturesque qualities of an old church in the English countryside. Its walls are of rough stone and it stands in the shelter of a grove of pine trees.

Description

I had the pleasure of seeing an interesting film at the BP Cinema on the restoration of ancient castles, abbeys and palatial homes in Britain. Restoration is not the correct description of what is being done, for the workmanship being carried out in some cases is a matter of survival of historic ruins. The complete restoration is beyond the realms of possibility in the present depressed economic situation. There came to mind a beautiful little stone church in Lower Main Road, Woodstock, which is in need of tender loving care. The dressed stone of the outside walls is black with the accumulated grime of car exhaust fumes and the smoke of many steam trains over the years. As a Christmas gesture, could not the citizens of Cape Town contribute towards the cleaning of these walls and thus earn the gratitude of the rector and his parish? I , for one, would be happy to make a donation.

Wide teak doors, surmounted by high wooden caves, lead from Union Avenue into the porch of the church, which superseded the old church next door in 1952. The church buildings include a hall, opened in 1940, and a manse.

Architectural heritage: wooden casement windows in the historic St. Stephen's Church on Riebeeck Square are being replaced as part of a restoration project sponsored by the Vernacular Architecture Society. The church was built in 1800 as the first theatre in South Africa and helped relieve the garrison's boredom during the first British occupation. It became part of the Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk in 1857. Restoration workers, from left, Mr Kennet Plaatjies, Mr Sedick Slemming and Mr Shaheed Hendricks help conservation architect Mrs Pat Riley of the National Monuments Council size up a replacement window.
