Water pump in the Company's Gardens, Cape Town
-
Subject
-
Cape Town (South Africa), Botanical gardens, Infrastructure, Water
-
Description
-
Seized by the tree it watered : this curiosity of the public gardens (it may be seated in reply to F.S., Firmount-Road, Sea Point) dates from pre-1850 days, when there were a number of wells in the Gardens. When a proper water service was laid on, these wells were abandoned and filled in. This pump, which bears the date 1842 embossed on it, was at the head of one of these wells. It was absorbed and lifted nearly five feet from the ground by the maturing oak to which it was probably originally attached.
