Foundation-stone for Van Rieebeck Festival's Gateway to Africa, Cape Town, 1952
-
Subject
-
Cape Town (South Africa), Afrikaner nationalism, Urban development
-
Description
-
The foundation-stone for the Gateway to Africa stands protected by a strong wire fence, but whipped by loose sand and rain in a desolate part of the Foreshore. The stone, then surrounded by the pageantry of the Van Riebeeck Festival, was laid on April 5 by a boy scout, a girl guide and a Voortrekker boy and girl. No decision has been made about making a start on building the monumental approach on the Foreshore.

Foreshore freeway construction, Cape Town City

Subject
-
Western Cape (South Africa), Urban areas, Land, Urban development, Infrastructure, Transport, Building
-
Description
-
View of the Foreshore, Cape Town, shows progress on the freeways. At the start of the major contract, which will provide about 1 km of elevated dual carriageways parallel to the harbour fence, Murray & Stewart (Cape Town) offered to cut six months from the contract time. Three years later, with allowable extensions, they are still ahead of that speeded-up schedule. This means that the project should be completed in September 1976. Allowing for escalation, the total value of the work now being handled on the freeways will be in the region of R21-million.
