In 1936 Donald Bain staged a Bushmen display at the Empire Exhibition in Johannesburg. Bain trucked 77 participating Bushmen to Johannesburg. Following the success of "Bain's Bushmen" he trucked them down to Cape Town for another performance. This image was taken en route to Johannesburg. Karel "Vet Piet" Kleinman was a skilled and well-known field ranger until his death in 2004. He was trained by Regopstaan Kruiper and was passing this ethnoecological knowledge on to a new generation of San trackers in a training project known as ||Uruke. Images from this trip document the first excursions into the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and were a central part of the work on oral history and mapping in the first years of research.
