Windmills and other water pumps form an essential role in sustaining the Kalahari's ecosystem. Subterranean water is pumped into troughs and other waterholes for animals to drink and helps sustain the wildlife during extended dry spells. Springbok are plentiful in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and are generally only hunted by the ǂKhomani San for their meat and skin. This image was taken during one of the first data collection excursions into the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. Images from this period were key in building a strong foundation for the oral history and mapping processes in the early years of the Land Claim research process.
