In this dramatic shot of Milnerton Lagoon, Ivor Markman used a polarising filter to emphasise the clouds. A red filter would have had a similar effect. When printing, he noticed brighter light in the sky than in the reflection, so held back part of the exposure to obtain a mirror balance.

Cape Town's Muslim community nearly lost part of its "protective holy circle" of shrines in the floods last week and calls have been made to give urgent attention to protecting these historic burial sites against vandals and natural disasters. Damage to several tombs near Bakoven during last weekend's floods has renewed fears among the Muslim community that the circle could be broken if nothing is done to stop the deterioration of the shrine.
