Pulpit in the Groote Kerk, Cape Town
-
Subject

-
Description
-
Groote Kerk pulpit : the magnificent pulpit inside the Groote Kerk, Adderley Street, which is among the finest pieces of wood carving in South Africa. The pulpit was installed on November 29, 1789. It was the work of Anton Anreith, the sculptor and a carpenter, Jan Jacob Graaff, who shared between them the fee of £400 for executing this job. Graaff's share was £280 and Anreith's £120. The best Indian wood, brought from the Dutch East Indian Company was used. A black anchor symbolising Hope hangs from the lectern. The pulpit rests on two lions. Anreith had intended it to rest on models of Faith, Hope and Charity but his plan was rejected by the Kerkraad. On hearing this, Anreith is reported as saying "What do people here know of art forms? All they know about is lions and tigers". So lions were chosen for the base of the pulpit.
