Nine months of intensive study after his ordinary school hours ended for a 10-year-old Moslem boy of Elsies River, Dien Mukkaddam, today, when he completed reading all the 30 suras (chapters) of the Koran. Dien, a pupil of Sheik Amien at Elsie's River, is in Standard 4 at St. Augustine's School, Parow. He will now set out to memorise the Koran, chapter by chapter.

A schoolboy is arrested during protests against the 1987 white parliamentary elections in Athlone township, Cape Town, May 1987. In 1986, some 25,000 people were imprisoned without trial under the Emergency regulations. Of that number, 10,000 were children under the age of eighteen. In April 1987, the government stated that only 1,400 children were still in detention.

Here they are on their way along the village main street to the post office to deliver a packet of sandwiches to their father, Mr Ian Luden, the postmaster. Mr Luden will be sorry to leave the island - he is an authority on its history. But he will be glad about the change for other reasons - there is no high school on the island. Children must go to boarding school or travel to and from school on the ferry.
