Description
-
At the age of 109, Mrs Rachel Wrentz may soon have to start a new life. She is still active, doing washing and cleaning. But, she says, to expect her to begin a new life now is asking too much. The oldest resident in Maitland Garden Village, she is one of many old-age pensioners in the area threatened with removal under the Group Areas Act. Many still living in the village are among those who originally moved there in 1921 when the City Council built 220 homes for employees, most of whom had apparently fought in World War 1. To Mrs Wrentz the thought of having to move is bad enough. But the spectre of being pushed into a Cape Flats township with a high crime rate haunts her.
