Foundation-stone for Van Rieebeck Festival's Gateway to Africa, Cape Town, 1952
-
Subject
-
Cape Town (South Africa), Afrikaner nationalism, Urban development
-
Description
-
The foundation-stone for the Gateway to Africa stands protected by a strong wire fence, but whipped by loose sand and rain in a desolate part of the Foreshore. The stone, then surrounded by the pageantry of the Van Riebeeck Festival, was laid on April 5 by a boy scout, a girl guide and a Voortrekker boy and girl. No decision has been made about making a start on building the monumental approach on the Foreshore.

-
Subject

-
Description
-
View of the Foreshore, Cape Town, shows progress on the freeways. At the start of the major contract, which will provide about 1 km of elevated dual carriageways parallel to the harbour fence, Murray & Stewart (Cape Town) offered to cut six months from the contract time. Three years later, with allowable extensions, they are still ahead of that speeded-up schedule. This means that the project should be completed in September 1976. Allowing for escalation, the total value of the work now being handled on the freeways will be in the region of R21-million.

B: Park Road, running along the south side of the common. C: The newly built Milner Road North, completed in spite of the protests of lovers of the common. D: The group of pines which marks the place where the old chapel known as the Tabernacle once stood (there were also two graveyards there). E: The Red Cross Children's Hospital. F: The Rustenburg Girls' High School. The network of paths revealed by this photograph is hardly noticeable from the ground.

-
Description
-
Visitors and tourists who delight in capturing with their cameras the many beauty spots of the "Incomplete Cape" will recognize this familiar scene view of Camps Bay and the Twelve Apostles, taken from the Glen. Two aspects, however, combining ancient and modern features, are depicted here. In the foreground is the old and famous Round House tearoom, built originally as a shooting box for Lord Charles Somerset. On the left is the ancient Round House Annexe - the feature of which as a Youth Hostel has been the subject of recent municipal discussion. The modern aspect lies in the middle distance where part of the amazing development of Camps Bay can be seen.
