The grand old lady of the Foreshore is finally to make way for a more modern development after a stay of execution of several years during which supporters and detractors debated her merits and shortcomings. The City Council has accepted a R1,5-million tender for the demolition of the Table Bay Power Station, one of the city's most familiar landmarks and operations are expected to start next month.

Until about 40 years ago Table Bay provided safe anchorage for seafarers close to the city, as the top picture shows. That was before the pier (seen in the picture) was demolished and reclamation pushed the waterfront more than two kilometres seawards.
