Description

The map divides Africa into five major regions: "Barbarie" [northern Africa]; "Haute Guinée" [West African coast], "Nigritie" [central Africa], "Abissinie" [Abyssinia and the Red Sea coastal region] and "Pays des Cafres" [South and East Africa, including what is now Somalia]. De l'Isle has divided these regions into smaller areas of dominion. The Dutch settlement at the Cape of Good Hope is labelled "Fort des Hollandois". The map marks cities and geographical features particularly in West Africa, Abyssinia, the Congo, along the Zambezi River and in South Africa. Also visible on the map are the eastern edge of Brazil, southern Europe, Arabia, the western edge of Asia, Madagascar and the other islands surrounding the continent. Surrounding the cartouche are illustrations of three elephants, an ostrich, a spear-wielding man on a horse and another man wrestling with a crocodile., Relief shown pictorially., Projection not given. Coordinates on map rendered as 0°-360° east of Greenwich. Projection not given. Bar scales on map in French marine leagues, French common leagues, Spanish marine leagues and German common leagues.
