Description
-
Proudest station master in the Peninsula today is probably Mr D. Airth. In yesterday's Argus a letter from a reader says: "In these times of grumbles and grouses and dissatisfaction in general, praise be to the Observatory station master for the beautiful garden he has created on railway property." But modest Mr Airth says the praise should go to the Railways horticulturist. "I only look after it," he said. Mr Airth, who is a keen gardener, finds soccer nights at Hartleyvale the bane of his life. "Clearing the garden of bottles and tins can be quite a business," he said.

Commuters board buses at Mowbray station, Cape Town
-
Subject
-
Transport, ,
-
Description
-
Six buses (at one time there were 11 of them) jockey for position in a space barely the size of two tennis courts. This is the Mowbray station terminus for buses serving Cape Flats surburbs and townships. Picture was taken during the evening peak hour on Monday. Packed buses left the terminus at the rate of almost one a minute. Three dispatchers directed the buses and queues efficiently and without fuss. Congestion was at its worst when three trains arrived within about 12 minutes, but the crowds soon thinned.
