- Description
- Note: "Advertisement. The inland parts of Africa being but very little known and the names of the regions and countries which fill that vast tract of land being for the greatest part placed by conjecture it may be judged how absurd are the divisions traced in some maps and why they were not followed in this.", There are 6 bar scales: English miles, French land leagues, British and French sea leagues, Arabic miles to English miles, Great miles of Arabia to a degree, Giam (Arabian sea measure) to English miles, and the travelling hours of the caravans to English miles., There are two insets and six gazetteers. The largest inset is located in the bottom left corner: "A particular chart of the Gold Coast where in are distinguish'd all the forts and factories belonging to the several European powers from D'Anville with many additions; by S. Boulton." This inset has its own scale in British and French sea leagues 20 to a degree. In the top left corner is an inset "Azores or Western islands belonging to Africa"., The six gazetteers contain geographical, political and local information. They are headed: "The principal outward parts of Africa: Northern Parts", "Southern and Western parts", "Western islands", "Southern parts", "South East islands and parts" and "Eastern parts". The "Southern Parts" inset gives information on Caffreria (Kaffraria), "Eastern Caffreria or the country of the Hottentots" including notes on the roles of men and women. This inset also includes a detailed account of the Cape Government's revenues and profits., Over the oceans wind direction is indicated by arrows., The map is torn along the fold lines into 4 pieces. There is some damage around the edges and some text is missing from the "Eastern parts" gazetteer.
