The sneeze machine, Cape Town
-
Subject
-

-
Description
-
Is it a loudspeaker? No, it's the latest in anti-riot equipment - the sneeze machine - which was used during the protest march by 8000 schoolchildren in Athlone yesterday. The new device sprays a combination of sneeze powder and teargas from from a police vehicle. A mealie-threshing machine inside the vehicle sucks up talcum powder and teargas and sprays it through the large nozzle on the roof. It has a more lasting effect than teargas because it settles on people's clothing. A person who comes in contact with it is said to sneeze uncontrollably, while his eyes water and his nose runs. The sneeze machine can be used in rain or wind when ordinary teargas would quickly dissipate. The nozzle of the machine can be swivelled in any direction from inside the vehicle.
