Argus newspaper vendor Donovan October, 13, and his dogs Cha-Cha Boy and Sheba are inseparable companions. The three are such good friends that newspaper-buyers outside the Meadowridge Service Station have seen Donovan covering his dogs up with his jersey and raincoat when it rains while he gets drenched. The dogs take the job seriously and they growled fiercely when an Argus photographer came too near their master to take this picture.

The gesture was organised by Mr Jan van Eck, Progressive parliamentary candidate for Stellenbosch. At work are Mrs van Zyl Slabbert, Professor van Zyl Slabbert (centre), Mr van Eck and some of their helpers.
