-
Description
-
Proudest station master in the Peninsula today is probably Mr D. Airth. In yesterday's Argus a letter from a reader says: "In these times of grumbles and grouses and dissatisfaction in general, praise be to the Observatory station master for the beautiful garden he has created on railway property." But modest Mr Airth says the praise should go to the Railways horticulturist. "I only look after it," he said. Mr Airth, who is a keen gardener, finds soccer nights at Hartleyvale the bane of his life. "Clearing the garden of bottles and tins can be quite a business," he said.

Overcrowding on trains force passengers to cling onto the outside of them, Cape Town
-
Subject
-
Cape Town (South Africa), Western Cape (South Africa), Railroads, Transport, Infrastructure, Railroad trains
-
Description
-
Mitchell's Plain / The Peninsula train service is rotten - especially third-class former passengers claim - and many have given up trying to squeeze into coaches or perform death-defying feats by clinging to the outside of speeding trains. Many go to work by bus now. Although figures show the South African Transport Service is losing customers, a visit along the Bellville and Mitchell's Plain lines showed that people are still sandwiched into coaches.
