The new constitution was unveiled with much pride and rejoicing. The image of the black sash folded over the constitution comes from a cartoon by Bob Connolly in the Rand Daily Mail, which portrayed the death of the constitution when the Nationalist government in a shameless act of political manoeuvring packed the Senate to end Coloured representation in Parliament. The Black Sash adopted this image as their symbol. Description provided by Tony Grogan.

The National Party, in the person of Minister of Constitutional Affairs, Chris Heunis, removes one of the pillars of democracy.
