Watchmaker, Cape Town, 1978

Description
-
Inheriting time: in this day and age of disappearing craftsmanship, Cape Town boasts a fourth-generation clock- and watchmaker, Austrian-born Thomas Niemeyer. Thirty-three-year-old Thomas's choice of trade was almost inevitable: on his fathers' side he's the fourth generation to enter the field and in his mother's the third generation. At the age of 16 he left school in Austria and went to Germany where he did an apprenticeship of 3 1/2 years. When he qualified he worked a further five years in Germany and Switzerland and attended a special college in Hamburg where he became a master watchmaker. His work is not restricted to watches, and he now specialises in making and repairing clocks. Six years ago he started a business in Cape Town, after 2 1/2 years of being employed here by other watchmakers. He decided to put his expertise to best use by working for himself. The walls of his office cum workshop are decorated with some of the clocks he's made. And if you thought this craft was synonymous with things old fashioned you'll quickly change your mind after seeing the chrome and glass modern timepieces hanging among the more traditional metal and ceramic clocks.
