Title: Pilgrimage to the holy mountain of Nhlangakazi

Church members start the journey to the top of the holy mountain Nhlangakazi. 100,000 pilgrims made a three day barefoot walk from the headquarters of the Nazareth Baptist Church, or Shembe. Shembe is a staunchly traditionalist Zulu cult that was founded in 1913 by Isaiah Shembe after a vision. Their beliefs are a mix of Old and New Testament and the ancestral veneration of traditional Zulu culture.

Description: Karen Daniels interviews Mr and Mrs Hiyat, ex-residents of Harfield Village, Cape Town. These interviews provide a very rich source or oral history regarding social life in Harfield Village and Claremont, as well as forced removals and their after-effects. Harfield Village, before the Group Areas Act, was a small mixed area of African, coloured and white inhabitants and was also known as "die vlak" by the locals. The themes included in the interviews are: inter-racial mixing and romanticisation of racial harmony, community and family relationships, religion - both Christian (Anglican, Methodist, Dutch Reformed) and Muslim (Harvey Road, Stegman Road and Main Road Mosques) - and schooling, leisure activities such as the Coon Carnival, music and jazz, shebeens and drinking. Class issues are discussed with reference to crime, gangs, "skollies", home ownership, rentals, incomes and employment. The physical, emotional and economic hardships endured by Harfield residents during and after the forced removals and the Group Areas Act are also discussed. Description: Bill Kemp, doing basic research for the Strata maps with Jakob Malgas, holds a recorder into which he spoke his notes and information as it was gathered. Kemp made several trips to the park during the 1997-1999 investigation period. Images from this trip document the first excursions into the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and were a central part of the work on oral history and mapping in the first years of research.

Description: During one of the early research trips to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, a trip was made to two adjacent grave sites near a former Bushmen settlement near Twee Rivieren. Several historically significant Bushmen are buried in these graveyards. While walking between these graveyards, the elders rest to catch their breath and the children play on the dunes.Images from this trip document the first excursions into the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and were a central part of the work on oral history and mapping in the first years of research.
