The following is conveyed in the letter: congratulations from Ruth on the birth of a son to Edith and Roy; Ruth discusses her minor operation then talks of the German invasion of Holland (May 1940) and the stress she went through to determine whether her relations were alright. She tells how she eventually found out that they were, but states that she cannot bear for them to live ''under the government of these barbarians'' (ie. under the government of Nazi Germany).
