Description
-
In less than an hour the station will echo the sounds of hurrying footsteps, the shouts and the general cacophony of noise associated with a busy rail terminal. In the meanwhile all is deathly quiet. The trains are motionless alongside the platforms like the fantastic serpents under pale lights. This picture was taken by The Argus photographer who toured the sleeping city with a reporter. In its loneliness the platform seems to stretch endlessly into the blackness o t night beyond.

Old police station, Cape Town

-
Description
-
One of the oldest buildings in Rondebosch - which has served as a police station for more than 70 years - is up for auction shortly. Built around 1880, it was originally a labourer's cottage on the old Rozendaal wine estate, and later another storey was added. The building has served as a police station since 1906 and represents the last of the old "cottage" police stations so prevalent in the Peninsula until recent years. For this reason representations have been made to the Public Works Department and National Monuments Council in order to get something done to preserve the building - but so far without success.

Description

Since the hoardings round the Adderley Street façade of the new Cape Town railway station were taken down recently, the bright design has been a talking point. In this view the new Airways wing is seen. At the extreme left is the entrance to the square behind the airways terminal, where buses for the airport arrive and depart. The arcade leading to the suburban and main line foyers at the extreme right of the picture. The tall building in the centre is the tower block, house[?] offices, and the new suburban concourse for Whites [is to] be to the right of this.

Signal Hill look-out station, Cape Town

-
Description
-
These ruins of the old look-out station on Signal Hill were the subject of a recent letter to The Argus by a visitor. One of the best panoramic views of Table Bay, the city and Table Mountain is obtained from this neglected site. Correspondents agree with 'Visitor' (Letters, July 12) that the site calls for development in keeping with Cape Town's traditional role of The Tavern of the Seven Seas.

Bulldozers (centre of picture) are cutting a swath through the old main line railway station to make way for a new road leading into the centre of the city. From Adderley Street, the new freeway, an extension of Strand Street, will carry the Sea Point traffic bound for the suburbs, straight to the Castle, then to the traffic interchange at the old market. There the new street will join the Eastern Boulevard.
