Two months later, on October 19 1986, President Machel, along with many of his cabinet, were killed when their plane crashed over South Africa's eastern border, Harare, Zimbabwe, 1986.

First-time voter takes directions at the first general elections held on 29 and 30 September 1992, to elect a President and National Assembly. This was the first attempt at holding multi-party elections ending 17 years of civil war. The ruling Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola (MPLA) won, leading União Nacional para a Independência Total de Angola (UNITA) to reject the election and resume the civil war.
