- Crossroads residents bury six-month-old Amanda Fanisa, asphyxiated by tear gas fired during police action in Crossroads, Cape Town. The South African security forces used tear gas as a standard means of "crowd control". Tear gas can be lethal, and it is especially dangerous when inhaled by young children.

- A prison official approaches the families of death-row prisoners, Wellington Meilies and Moses Jantjies, to inform them that the two men were hanged earlier that morning. In 1987, when Meilies and Jantjies were executed, thirty-two political prisoners remained on death row in Pretoria Central Prison, and South Africa had the highest number of hangings in the world.

- Professor Ismail Mohamed, a United Democratic Front (UDF) leader, reaches out to his daughter, Elaine, as he is arrested by South African security police. Mohamed was detained and charged with treason along with fifteen others in the Pietermaritzburg Treason Trial. Eventually all were exonerated.

- African National Congress (ANC) supporters flee towards the South African side of the border with the Ciskei bantustan after they were fired at, killing 29 marchers and wounding dozens, during an ANC march on the Ciskei homeland, 7 September, 1992. The ANC supporters were killed when Ciskei security forces opened fire after the marchers broke through the border in an attempt to force the Ciskeien military leader, Brigadier Oupa Gqozo, to allow free political activity in Ciskei.

- Miners meet at the start of a national strike called by the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM). Although the mining companies and the government tried to prevent miners from organising unions, and miners were the last to unionize in the 1970s, NUM became the largest union in the COSATU (Congress of South African Trade Unions) federation, and a powerful force in the democratic political movement against oppression.

- A Pondo woman sits in the ruins of her home, burned out during clashes between Zulus and Pondos. Thousands of Pondo people migrated to this region of Natal (now KwaZulu-Natal) from the Transkei in search of work. Many Zulus, threatened by this influx, resorted to violence against the newcomers, almost turning some shantytowns into war zones.
