Wit-doeke (Afrikaans for "white headbands") vigilantes, unopposed by the police, set fire to homes in Crossroads, a squatter township near Cape Town. An estimated 80,000 people were left homeless and 60 dead as a result of Wit-doeke action in 1986.

The interviews in this collection deal with the formation and impact of the UDF in the Western Cape in the 1980s. Key figures involved with the UDF are interviewed, including Cheryl Carolus, Lionel Louw, Sydney Luckett and Phyllis Orner. Themes include: community based organisations affiliated to the UDF; the effects of apartheid; religious affiliation; role of the UDF in the community; trade unions. On 16 July 1987, Peter Sello Motau, thirty-two years old, was gunned down in Swaziland by South African agents. Motau was a dedicated young activist who had joined the African National Congress (ANC) in 1976, living in exile since his departure on Christmas Eve 1975. His mother is shown in this picture mourning his death at a severely restricted funeral in her home in Soweto.
