His name was Sydney and he lived in Langa. Sydney told me he earned all the money which kept his paralysed grandmother, his sister and his brother going. He did not know where his parents were. This photograph was taken on a Saturday evening on Main Road, Rosebank, 1981. On the following Monday morning I read a filler in 'The Cape Times' which told of a black boy named Sydney who was selling newspapers in Rosebank and was run over by a car on Saturday evening. He died instantly, the report said. The next day I started searching for his grandmother's house in Langa. She cried when I gave her the photograph of her smiling grandson

Description

Today (Tues) when the MCC [Marylebone Cricket Club] meet, it is expected that the South African tour will be formally cancelled. Yesterday (Monday) two of the principal characters who still hope that all is not lost, met to talk things over. Basil D'Oliveira and Colin Cowdrey met for the first time since the crisis of the past week, at Cowdrey's home at Limpsfield, Kent. Said Colin: "It was the first opportunity I had to talk with Basil since his selection for the tour." D'Oliveira, in London after a cricket holiday in the West Country, said: "When the skipper telephoned to congratulate me on my selection he invited me to drop in for a meal when I was next in London to talk over the tour. We both still very much hope that a way may be found for the tour to continue." Said Colin: "I live in hope."
