The map shows Libya, Sudan, a portion of the Sahara desert, Benin, Cameroon and surrounding countries to the coast of the Gulf of Guinea. The map also indicates the following routes: Richardson, Barth, Overweg and Vogel, 1850-1853; Hornemann, 1798; Ritchie and Lyon, 1818-1825; Oudney, Denham and Clapperton, 1822-1825; Clapperton and Lander, 1825 & 1826; Lander 1830 (the same journey was repeated by Allen and Oldfield in 1833); Dickson 1851 and "Native Routes". The map is surrounded by impressions of Africa including "Ghat, the Tuaricks [Tuareg]", "Mursuk, the Tibbus", Lake Tsad [Chad], "Roman ruins at Ghareah", as well as portraits of James Richardson, Adolf Overweg, Heinrich Barth and Eduard Vogel., "Designed & executed by A. A shepherd and his family, outside the home he built himself under a massive rock in the Cederberg, south-western Cape, 1987. During the bitterly cold winter months, he would trek with his employer's sheep to the Ceres-Karoo, but as soon as spring arrived, he would start the long trek back to the mountains. This had been his life for the best of 70 odd years
