Aerial view from Signal Hill over the City Bowl and Cape Flats, Cape Town
-
Subject
-
Cape Town (South Africa), Urban development, City planning, Environment
-
Description
-
This unusual aerial view of Cape Town has all the boldness, optimism and excitement of the New Year. The great vista stretching over the Cape Flats towards Hottentots Holland to symbolize the future. Indeed it is in this direction that much of the Peninsula's expansion is taking place. But Table Mountain is still dominant and timeless, defying any further encroachment up its slopes. The picture was taken at a height of 4,500 ft. The four famous beaches of Clifton are easily recognized at the bottom on the left. Bottom right is Camps Bay, some of whose residents might even be able to point out their own houses. Voortrekker Road (top left) through Kensington, Goodwood, Parow and Bellville, is clearly visible, so are the two cooling towers of the Athlone power station, with Langa just beyond them.
