Cape Town's Muslim community nearly lost part of its "protective holy circle" of shrines in the floods last week and calls have been made to give urgent attention to protecting these historic burial sites against vandals and natural disasters. Damage to several tombs near Bakoven during last weekend's floods has renewed fears among the Muslim community that the circle could be broken if nothing is done to stop the deterioration of the shrine.

Coon Carnival troupes gyrate through the city: Heppy Nuwe Djaar, says Achmat Adams, of the Jolly Johnson Troupe, at the Coon Carnival at Hartleyvale today. This picture was taken by staff photographer Dana Le Roux after the gaily dressed troupes had marched exuberantly through the streets of the city on their way to the carnivals at Hartleyvale and Athlone.
