The destruction of District Six was one of the worst insults inflicted upon the coloured people of the Cape by the National Party (NP). On a Sunday morning in 1974, three boys from a nearby shack strolled passed the demolition, sat on what used to be the pavement, and watched the destruction. Others also gathered, but no on said anything for a long time. When people have experienced too much pain, their senses become numb. His name was Sydney and he lived in Langa. Sydney told me he earned all the money which kept his paralysed grandmother, his sister and his brother going. He did not know where his parents were. This photograph was taken on a Saturday evening on Main Road, Rosebank, 1981. On the following Monday morning I read a filler in 'The Cape Times' which told of a black boy named Sydney who was selling newspapers in Rosebank and was run over by a car on Saturday evening. He died instantly, the report said. The next day I started searching for his grandmother's house in Langa. She cried when I gave her the photograph of her smiling grandson
