The details regarding Elizabeth, Nicolas Visscher's widow, are drawn from Gallica, Bibliothèque Nationale de France: http://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b7759505j.notice. See also: Atlas nouveau … by Guillaume de L'Isle (Amsterdam: Covens & Mortier, 1730); R.V. Tooley, Collectors’ guide to maps of the African continent and Southern Africa (London: Carta Press, 1969), p. 120; Norwich's maps of Africa : an illustrated and annotated carto-bibliography (Norwich, Vt. : Terra Nova Press, 1997), map 180 (note)., The inset of the Cape of Good Hope is of particular importance. It indicates the presence of slaves on Robben Island ("daar de Slaven in de Ketting loopen"). It also gives "extensive detailed and fairly accurate topographical information ... together with the names of owners of farms and plots of that period. Amongst these are de Beer, Swart Pieter, Martin de Smit, Roelof Pasman, Gerrit Kloeton, and the French Huguenot settlement. These place names add considerably to the knowledge of the history of the ... Cape of Good Hope"--Norwich's Maps of Africa, p. 203., Three insets: "Élévation du Port et Mont Table au Cap de Bonne Espérance" (5 x 11 cm); "Plan du Port et Mont Table au Cap de Bonne Espérance" (10 x 11 cm); "[Cabo de Bona Esperanca]" (13 x 23 cm)., Text primarily in French. The inset of the Cape is also in Dutch with some Portuguese notations., Restored and hinged between acid-free boards.

Description

Bar scale on map given in Dutch and French miles., Publisher's advertisement offering a facsimile of Nieuwe Naaukeurige Land-en Zee-Kaart, van het voornaamste Gedeelte der Kaffersche Kust, Begrypende de Sardanje-Bay en de Caap de Bonne Esperanca met alle des Zelfs Plantazien. The original map was included in an atlas compiled by Ottens consisting of 835 maps by various cartographers all dated between 1641 and 1729. The date of this individual map is given as between 1688 and 1702., English translation of the title: "New and accurate map and sea chart of the Cape coast from Saldanha Bay to the Cape of Good Hope"., Dutch, Latin and English text., Title across top of map: Nova et Accurata Tabula Promontorii Bonae Spei vulgo Cabo de Bona Esperanca., Norwich maintains that although Ottens is widely associated with this map because it is listed in an atlas compiled by him, it was neither drawn nor published by him personally., The map gives the location of property owned by early Dutch settlers with names of owners.
