Description

Mass Meeting - Part of the audience of more than 1 000 who packed the Athlone Civic Centre last night to hear Durban-based Islamic "scholar" Mr Ahmed Deedat, right, expound on why "The Satanic Verses" author Salman Rushdie should be "killed, slain, slaughtered and executed". Mr Deedat, head of the Islamic Propagation Centre International, also said that Christians who criticised calls for Rushdie's death were "hypocrites" with a faith that was "garbage". Mr Deedat, whose topic was "Should Rushdie Die? What is the Judeo-Christian Verdict?", said Islam demanded that blasphemers be "put on crosses to die a slow death" or that they "have their hands and feet chopped off".

Crossroads petition: Hundreds of people of all races today responded to the Progressive Reform Party's appeal to save Crossroads squatter camp from being demolished. By midday three of five tables collecting signatures in the city had run out of petition forms. Mr Neil Ross, regional organiser of the PFP in the Western Cape said that each table collected about 500 signatures. "The response has been overwhelming and all sections of the community have come forward. We will collect more signatures in the next two weeks," he said. In addition to collecting signatures, the PFP is distributing pamphlets outlining the situation at Crossroads. More than 40 tables were set up in the Peninsula to collect signatures.
