Description
-
The San used a North-South route through this area following the river bed, the dunes and the streets. This route connected many key sites within the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park with the former settlement. The ǂKhomani San used this site as a temporary camp while travelling through the area. The site can not sustain a permanent campsite as all the water in the area is salt water. The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is home to a number of abandoned buildings and structures which are now used as tourist attractions and lookout posts for travellers. Images from this trip document the first excursions into the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and were a central part of the work on oral history and mapping in the first years of research.

When they returned from the Empire Exhibition they discovered their homes and belongings had been burnt.Images from this trip document the first excursions into the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and were a central part of the work on oral history and mapping in the first years of research.

Label on every stone - The first part of the dismantling process of the historic wall sections got under way at the Golden Acre site yesterday when detailed photographs of the stones were taken from a hydraulic crane. Each stone has been labelled to assist the SA Museum authorities to rebuild them exactly as they were. The sections were provisionally declared national monuments. The fate of the reservoir is still to be decided.
