The destruction of District Six was one of the worst insults inflicted upon the coloured people of the Cape by the National Party (NP). On a Sunday morning in 1974, three boys from a nearby shack strolled passed the demolition, sat on what used to be the pavement, and watched the destruction. Others also gathered, but no on said anything for a long time. When people have experienced too much pain, their senses become numb. Pauline Kuzwayo is a widow who lives in the Twala Section of Kathlehong. A deeply religious person, she cried softly when she spoke about the death of her son, Sibusiso. "I do not know where he died. I do not even know how he died. But he was shot. When I found him in the mortuary, there were many other women also looking for their children. One had to see the piles of bodies to believe that so many young people were being murdered. And each body had a mother. It was left for us, the mothers, to find our children's bodies."
