United Democratic Front (UDF) leaders had called upon people to march to Pollsmoor Prison in August 1985 to demand the release of Nelson Mandela and other political prisoners. The students were also protesting against the state's education system, which offered blacks inferior education.

Nolinda Wontota (left) was due to see her father, a Robben Island prisoner, for the first time this Saturday. Then all visiting privileges to the prisoners were withdrawn. Now, with other relatives of prisoners from all over the country, she is waiting to hear the outcome of an urgent application before the Supreme Court to have the ban on visits lifted. With her is her sister Theresa, 17, and elderly heart patient Mrs L. Mafuna who travelled down to Cape Town from Port Elzabeth to see the nephew she regards as her own son.
